Level-up on your Avalanche Education. Soul Rides offers hands-on, in-field, small group classes to meet your schedule and skill level. Our classes are interactive, entertaining and mobile to ensure you have the exclusive Soul Rides experience. Our experienced and passionate instructors are able to design a training program exclusive to your needs.

Avalanche Skills Training 1 (AST1)

Soul Rides likes to keep classes small so there is a lot of one-on-one instruction time. Working hand-in-hand with the group over two days, we watch the weather, plan riding, and learn together. We hate to miss good riding too so we work with the weather and the needs of all involved to meet our goals. This is an entry-level course in the avalanche world and we recommend all backcountry users traveling in avalanche terrain have this educational tool in their belt.

AST 1 for Sledders

$400+tax per person (min 4/max 8)

AST 1 for Skiers and Snowboarders with Mini Kitty

$500+tax per person (min 4/max 4)

This 2-day deal will bring the understanding that staying safe in avalanche terrain is a life-long process and this is only the start. The AST 1 course is set-up to give you base knowledge that you need to apply to your daily mountain adventures. This course is taught out of Soul Rides's 27' mobile facility. Our goal is to keep you on the mountain having fun while learning how to manage avalanche risks. Beacons, shovels, probes and airbag backpacks will be provided to each rider during riding time.

The Avalanche Skills Training Level 1 course will provide entry-level decision-making framework that is based on the most advanced knowledge available. It is suitable for use by people with basic training and little experience.

In addition, the course will:

  • Provide the prerequisite knowledge required for further avalanche training.

  • Introduce and promote the Avalanche Skills Training Level 2 course as the logical next step for gaining intermediate-level decision-making skills.

Objectives

At the end of the course students should be able to:

  • Understand the basics of avalanche formation and release.

  • Identify avalanche terrain.

  • Know the steps required to plan and carry-out a trip.

  • Use the Avaluator as a decision-making tool in areas where trips are rated using the Avalanche Terrain Exposure Scale (ATES) and where Avalanche Danger Ratings and Avalanche Bulletins are available.

  • Find resources for obtaining ATES terrain ratings if their trip is not rated.

  • Find resources for obtaining Avalanche Danger Ratings and Avalanche Bulletins if these are not available.

  • Use appropriate travel techniques in avalanche terrain.

  • Carry-out a companion rescue.

  • Understand the limits of their training.

Avalanche Skills Training 2 (AST2)

AST 2 is a 4-day course that Soul Rides will customize to the needs and schedule for you and your crew. We understand sometimes it is hard to find time for a 4-day course so we can break-it-up to suit your schedule. The AST 2 course allows us a lot of in-field time to develop skills you need to navigate multiple types of terrain in elevated avalanche hazard situations. AST 1 must be completed before attending an AST 2 course.

AST 2 for Sledders

$800+tax per person (min 4/max 8)

AST 2 for Skiers and Snowboarders with Mini Kitty

$900+tax per person (min 4/max 4)

The Avalanche Skills Training Level 2 course will provide an intermediate level decision-making framework that is based on the most advanced knowledge available. It is suitable for use by people with a moderate degree of training and experience.

In addition, the course will:

  • Provide the prerequisite knowledge required for further avalanche training.

  • Introduce and promote the Canadian Avalanche Association Industry Training Program as the accepted standard for advanced avalanche training.

Objectives

At the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • Use the Avaluator as a filtering tool to determine when additional planning and travel techniques are required to travel safely.

  • Be familiar with Avalanche Danger Ratings verification techniques for personal use on a local scale.

  • Be familiar with the ATES technical model as a means to develop personal, local terrain ratings.

  • Use route finding to take advantage of nuances in terrain to manage personal risk.

  • Use travel techniques in avalanche terrain appropriate to the avalanche conditions.

  • Proficiently carry-out a companion rescue.

  • Understand the limits of their training.

Companion Rescue Skills (CRS)

Companion Rescue Skills is a 1-day course designed to update your avalanche rescue skills. A lot has changed with technology and rescue techniques in the last 5-years, so if you have not updated your rescue skills recently this is a great refresher. This course will update you on the changes that have occurred and ensure you can still pull-off a search and rescue in time to save a friend. This course is open to any backcountry recreationist - there are no prerequisites.

CRS for Sledders

$150+tax per person (min 4/max 8)

CRS for Skiers and Snowboarders with Mini Kitty

$150+tax per person (min 4/max 4)

The Companion Rescue Skills course can be used as the first stepping stone to avalanche training and can also be used as a refresher for those who have previous training in either AST 1, AST 2 or any other avalanche training. The vital skills covered in this course are a "must have" for all backcountry recreationists, whether you ski, board, sled, hike or climb.

After taking the 1-day CRS course, we encourage all participants to consider further training by taking the AST 1 course.

Objectives

At the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • Consider and incorporate preventative measures.

  • Prioritize actions if caught in an avalanche.

  • Understand the function of airbags.

  • Understand transceiver functions and practice transceiver skills.

  • Apply search and rescue techniques.

  • Practice searching without a transceiver.

  • Consider multiple burial situations.

  • Organize a group rescue.

  • Identify post-incident considerations.

Avalanche Education is a graduated process, a lot like learning to drive.

— Wayne Hnatuk, January 16, 2017

A couple days after the passing of Dan Davidoff, Jeremy Hanke from Soul Rides got ahold of us in Dan's hometown. He offered to train 12 people as a donation to the community. Knowing what cultural change would come of it. While giving the course, we offered to pay his expenses, he declined, instead he insisted he wanted us to use the money to do something for Dan's children. I sat in on the in-class portion of the course and was blown away by his passion and knowledge. I really suggest that if you ride in the backcountry at any level that you take an avy course. Thanks Jeremy. We built and installed 2 beacon checkpoint stations in Dan's hometown with the money raised.
